Breastfeeding and Co-Sleeping

Wow, haven't been on here in a while. Miss Emma is doing really good. She's now 3.5 months old and about 15 pounds & 25 inches. She's a very healthy baby :)

One thing Robb and I were both very passionate about before we had Emma was that she would only be breastfed. Our ultimate goal is to go until she's 2 years old. A lot of people think we're crazy and won't do it but I think with having his support I will make it. One thing we didn't think we were going to do was co-sleep with the baby. We had the bassinet in our room, thought she would sleep in there till about 6 months then move into her crib in her own room. Well, I don't know the last time she's slept in her bassinet LOL. She would always start out there, I would get up to feed her either in the living room or in bed. Then I started feeding in bed more and more. Where we started to fall asleep after.
Then baby girl got smart.
Decided one night she didn't want to be rocked to sleep, or held. Nothing was working. So I laid down in bed, she nursed a bit then just cuddled till she fell asleep. In our bed. Since then I've tried putting her asleep in her bassinet at nap time or at night. She instantly wakes up and looks at me. She knows she doesn't want to be there.
The only thing is she wakes up every 2 hours to eat. Not sure if this is because of her size and she's growing or she's used to me being right there and it's habit. If I try to get her to go back to sleep without nursing she ends up fully waking up and getting pretty upset. I don't think either of us fully wake up during the night so it's not that big of a deal, though a few hours straight of sleep would be nice :)

So a question for you mom's that co-sleep and breastfeed, how often do your kiddos wake up to nurse at night? And how old are they.
I'm also thinking of getting a guard rail for the side of the bed, like on a toddlers bed, to be a little safer. She's not rolling yet but I think it's going to happen any minute now. Do you use one?

Cloth Diaper Swap

Updated Nov 3/09

So, this is way late. But better late than never right? This is in part that it takes FOREVER for stuff to get shipped to Canada from the States and I have a newborn in the house who thinks mommy should spend every waking moment with her lol.
Megan from here though you probably know her best as Mom2chunkymonky from Twitter :) hosted this very awesome swap.

My awesome swap partner was Amanda or mandyw526 on twitter. Don't you just love twitter?!
You can also find her here :) She sent Emma and I an awesome present! A very cute yellow OS Diaper, Baby Legs to match and 2 samples of Rockin Green detergent! In Mango Sorbet and the new Peppermint Cocoa :)
We've had everything for not quite a week and I've almost used all the detergent, this stuff rocks! And I use it on all our laundry, not just our cloth diapers :)

So a big THANK YOU!! to Megan and Amanda for an awesome swap!! :D

Update

So I forgot to mention (baby brain :p) that the brand of the diaper is Tweedle Bugs :) And here is a couple pics of Emma in her new diaper and baby legs. The diaper is a bit big on her still, more bulky than anything, but it is a one size diaper. Think this is going to be a super cute outfit for the spring time and next summer.

Emma Rose

Story of how Emma Rose made it into this world. Born Sunday September 27, 2009 @ 6:21pm. 9lbs 2oz & 20.75 inches.

So I think I have time for a quick run down of what happened. Robb went to get his parents from the airport, they are here till Sunday, so I know I won't be on the computer much till they leave. And baby girl is sleeping, she loves sleeping :)

So Saturday night I was getting my regular BH, then they started changing and I was getting pain in the bottom of my abdomen. That was around 10:30 or 11pm. I decided to go to bed because that usually makes them go away. But I couldn't sleep, they were getting stronger. At about 2am they were getting pretty close together, and we were at the hospital at 4am. They hooked me up and I was in a room by just before 6am. Would've been sooner but they were very busy, 5 or 6 babies total that day, all in the am, I was the only that held on all day lol. I was 3cm when I went in, or at least at 5:30 when they checked me. I got the epi at 9:30am, so about 10.5 hours into it. I was hurting by then lol. They checked me a bit after that and I was over 6cm. The epi slowed down my progress a bit but I was 9cm by 4pm. The nurse got me set up and I was pushing at 4:45pm. The doctor came in and told me all the other babies born that day were 5.5 - 6.5 pounds, but I wouldn't get one of those, he wasn't kidding! lol. I was moving her down pretty good, but they did have to use the vacuum. It came off once for sure but I think it was twice. I know he said that if it came off again they would try the forceps once but then I was going for a c-section. But that didn't happen and I got her out. He had to cut me pretty good too, I didn't even ask how many stitches. They had to put me laying down a bit to get everything to work so I didn't want to really hold her till I could sit up, plus I couldn't catch my breath from pushing for so long. But she was born at 6:21 and I was holding her at 7:30, took him that long to sew me back together :|
Oh, and I was having steady contractions, 2-3mins apart for quite a while and as soon as we wanted to start pushing, they just stopped coming, lucky if there was one every 5 mins. So I had to be hooked up to oxytocin to get them going again.

Needless to say, mama still hurts lol. I've been on T3's since the epi wore off. Only have 2 left and I'm not too happy about that LOL! Will try Tylenol ultra, and if it gets really bad I think you can get T1's over the counter.

Because of the 'traumatic' delivery (what they keep calling it :p) she was put on the billy blanket until last night. She had quite a large hemotoben and lots of swelling and fluid pockets on her head. They were worried because of how much she would have to process through her, but her levels stayed low and the doctor said today she looked great and is almost healed up.

Saw the Dr today and everything looks really good. They told me at the hospital that I would need to feed her every 3-4 hours because of the jaundice, and that's normally when she would wake to eat so that was okay. Last night neither one of us woke up and she slept almost 7 hours before I got her up to eat. So Robb asked the Dr today how often she needs to eat and she said because she is a big baby she doesn't need to be woken up and just to let her sleep, not to worry about it. So hopefully she sleeps good tonight too, I probably could have gotten another hour out of her today LOL.

Sooo Tired!

So I realized I've been reading everyone else's blogs but haven't posted anything in about forever LOL. I only have 2 weeks left of work and hope to get a bit of sleep at that point, we'll see how that works out for me :p
This is just a bit of an update to let you all know that I will write a much better post this weekend (have 4 days off!) about the prenatal class me and the hubs took this weekend :)

My Momma on Cloth

My mom did indeed use cloth diapers on my brother and I. The reason wasn't what we would all hope it was for but that we were both extremly sensitive to the pampers out at the time. So she used what I believe as the only option then, flats/prefolds and covers, which were little rubber pull on pants. She also had a 5 gallon bucket full of water and chemical to soak the diapers before she washed. And the dreaded diaper pins, she told me last night that a baby sure doesn't like it when poked with a diaper pin LOL.

I've told her before that I was thinking of using cloth and that it had changed so much from when she did it. She was supportive but I don't think she thought it would come to anything. I was talking to her last night and we were discussing the baby shower, I told her if anyone asks I don't need diapers. She asked why? Are you actually going with cloth? I told her I was and that the diapers now were almost like disposables in ease of use and the cuteness factor couldn't be denied. Then I told her about the snappi, as I do plan on using pf's at the beginning. I do believe that changed her mind about everything, she was quite impressed.

So hearing about pockets, the new types of covers and the snappi my mom is quite okay with the 'new' way of clothdiapers. Then I sent her this picture to seal the deal with the cuteness factor. Four new dipes from Goodmamas that came yesterday in the mail. :)
